1. Saturday 27
February 2016: Radical Statistics Annual
Conference, Priory Street Centre
YPS members may
recall the corresponding event in 2013, which several members attended. The
precise title has yet to be decided, but the main focus will on data-rich
aspects of health, education, public finance, inequality etc. and other current
political topics. Jeremy Corbyn will be mentioned!
A "Big
Data" event is also planned for the same venue on Friday 26th, as well as social events on the
Thursday evening and Sunday morning – the latter to be a “Radical Walk of York”, led by Paul
Furness, author of “York: A Walk on the
Wild side: Tales of Riot, Rebellion and Revolution” (no ISBN).
(2015sep) Further
information including contact email address will soon be at www.radstats.org.uk/conf2016
2. Tuesday 19 April
2016: "Welcome to York" from YPS for members of the Newcastle Lit
& Phil.
This is the
"return visit" following the YPS trip to Newcastle in 2015,
where we were feted handsomely throughout a long day, and met a large number of their
members. I hope we can reciprocate their generosity. Accordingly, I would
welcome volunteers to support me in York please on April 19th. Particularly
important pressure-points will be around 11am and also 5-6pm. If you feel you
can help me, even for a short time, then please contact me (details
above). Thank you!
Details to be
confirmed, but here is a rough outline:
- 11am: Newcastle visitors arrive
- 11-6: social programme (To be arranged)
- 6pm. YPS Lecture in Tempest Anderson Hall (note start-time is earlier than usual). Topic: "The Northern Lit & Phil Societies" - which will include YPS as well as Newcastle and many others.
3. 17-18 June 2016: "Borders and Beyond" in the
Middle East (BABITME): The 1916 Sykes-Picot agreement -
Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow
(with cultural
events on Thursday 16th and Sunday 19th June).
This topical conference will be at York St John University and is also
supported by the Post-War Reconstruction Unit at York's 'other' university.
Apart from international big-name speakers, we expect displays, performances
and local contributions exploring York's links with the Middle East yesterday,
today and tomorrow. Thus we shall be "breaking the barriers" between
local history, family history, and world history. Papers already offered cover
"Archaeological perspectives", the Hejaz railway, the view from the
other side (Germany, Bulgaria, Turkey etc.), maps and counter-maps, the impact
upon theatre and film, as well as items on Gertrude Bell, Mark Sykes of
Sledmere, T.E. Lawrence, Toynbee etc., all of whom have local links.
